Book Week

06.09.21

Featherbrook College has continued to capture key calendar celebrations to complement the areas of literacy and numeracy. Book Week was one such focus our college community enjoyed recently. Book Week has been celebrated every year since we opened in 2017. This has been an important opportunity to again promote the importance of reading; the importance of literacy; the importance of engagement with texts and books as the currency required to access all other curriculum areas and for improved life chances and success.

The Book Week theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds sought to pique the imagination of our students. As would have been the case if we had been on site, students were invited to participate in a (virtual) book character parade, enjoy storytelling time by renowned authors and create a display poster that captures the Book Week theme. To say the response by students and their families was extraordinary is arguably far from accurate. The extent to which families engaged with creating book character costumes and taking the time to upload a photo of their ‘character’ to be added to the virtual parade was so very heartening. Congratulations and a BIG thank you to our Featherbrook College families. The accompanying photos are reflective of the fun that our families had with this opportunity.

Our students also enjoyed storytelling from our guest authors Jane Godwin and Claire Saxby who had been scheduled to deliver their stories on site in school. They were very keen to support our students’ to enjoyment of Book Week through virtual storytelling. The authors also fielded questions from our students about their writing and author experiences. The students submitted their questions beforehand and the authors recorded their sessions for the students to enjoy with their teachers during Book Week.

The Book Week poster display was also very generously engaged with by students and families. The utter creativity of our students is very clear in the posters on display in the blog. Enjoy!
